1868 Producer, director and manager Birth of Charles Dillingham. Dillingham’s dozens of productions include Like New, The Last of Mrs. Cheyney, Sunny, Bulldog Drummondand The Red Mill.

1962 Alan Jay Lerner and Frederic Loeweit’s musical Brigadoon is revived by the New York City Center Light Opera Company. Under the direction of John Dalrymplethe production plays at the City Center with the actor stone palm tree as Tommy Albright.

1971 Happy birthday to the Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, behind the roles of Maureen in To rent, Elphaba in Bad, and Elizabeth in If soand voices Elsa in Disney’s animated film Frozen.

1985 John Malkovich leads a revival of George Bernard Shawit’s weapons and man on Broadway at circle in the square. The production, which features Kevin Kline and Raul Julialasts 109 performances.

1996 Tartuffe: Born Againan updated version of Moliereit’s Tartuffe by Freyda Thomas, opens at Circle in the Square. It features John Glover, Alison Fraserand Jane Krakowski. Production wrapped less than a month later, after only 25 performances.

1999 The second Broadway version of scarlet pimpernel ends at the Minskoff Theatre. A few months later, the Frank Wildhorn the musical returns to New York in a third, scaled-down incarnation at the Neil Simon Theater.

2013 An Off-Broadway revival of Bertold Brechtit’s The Caucasus Chalk Circlefeaturing Christopher Lloyd and featuring the music of Duncan Sheikhopens at Classic Stage Company. Brian Kulick leads a cast that also includes Mary Testa and Elizabeth A. Davis.

2019 Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon Bring Terrence McNally’s Frankie and Johnny at Moonlight back on Broadway for its first revival, which opens today at the Broadhurst Theatre. McDonald’s is a restaurant waitress for Shannon’s short-lived cook who comes together for a night of fiery passion that ends up having the possibility of love.
