1859 Birthday of the King of Broadway Operetta Victor Herbert, composer of Babes in Toyland, Le Moulin Rouge, Miss Milliner, Naughty Marietta, Lovers, and many editions of The follies of Ziegfeld.

1904 Birthday of the playwright, screenwriter and wit SJ Perelman, whose Broadway efforts include The beauty part and the booklet A Touch of Venus.

1909 When her father’s will stipulates that his daughter should marry a Bingham College graduate, she becomes The mixed fair. Elsie Janis plays the role of the only enrolled student, helping her fiancé succeed. George Ade provides music and lyrics, Gustav Lüders the score.

1942 In From V we sing, the V represents victory in World War II. Co-produced by Alexander Cohen and the American Youth Theater, the timely show hosts lively songs, skits and jitterbugs. The cast includes betty garrett, Phil Leedsand Daniel Nagrin.

1961 Tallulah Bankhead plays a 50-year-old woman who leaves her dismissive family, dresses up as an 80-year-old, and becomes a babysitter in Midgie Purvis. Mary Chase’s play is directed by Burgess Meredith at the Martin Beck Theatre.

1967 The deer parkadaptation of his novel by Norman Mailer, features Torn tear, Gene Lindseyand Marsha Mason. Leo Garen directs the show at the Théâtre de Lys.

1968 Iris Murdoch and James Saunders adapt Murdoch’s novel The italian girl for the scene. Richard Pasco and Elizabeth Sellars direct the cast and Val May steps. He is filming in London at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

1968 A Day in the Death of Joe Egg opens at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, starring Albert Finney, Joan Hickson and Zena Walker. Michael Blakemore directs Peter Nichols’ play, which won Walker a Tony Award for his performance.

2002 A settlement is announced between the producer Scott Roudin and composer Stephen Sondheim on ownership of the musical wise guysrenamed since Bounce, which allows its 2003 premiere at the Goodman Theater in Chicago to go ahead. When the musical finally opened in New York in 2008, it had yet another new title: road show.

2003 First performance of Radiant babyan Off-Broadway musical about the late pop artist Keith Haring at public theaterNewman’s space. George C. Wolfe directs the production, which features lyrics by Ira Gasman, Stuart Rossand Debra Barchabook by Ross and score by Barsha.

2004 Movie star Isabella Rossellini plays with Richard Thomas in the world premiere of Terrence McNallyit is Stendhal’s syndrome, which begins the performances at Primary stages‘ new house, 59E59.

2011 The whipping man, Matthew Lopez’s historical drama about a Jewish Confederate soldier returning home to his former slaves, who are also Jews, opens Off-Broadway in a Manhattan Theater Club production directed by Tony winner Douglas Hughes. Jay Wilkison, André Holland and André Braugher star.

2018 The world premiere of Terrence McNally fire and air, exploring the history of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, opens Off-Broadway at the Classic Stage Company. Douglas Hodge stars as Diaghilev alongside James Cusati-Moyer as dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. The cast also includes Marin Mazzie, John Glover, Jay Armstrong Johnson and Marsha Mason.
