1888 One of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s greatest hits opens: Little Lord Fauntleroy, with Tommy Russell. The play tells the story of an American boy who discovers he is the heir to a British fortune and is sent to live with a cold-hearted guardian. It was frequently revived, shot and filmed over the next century.

1947 A tram named Désir makes its historic stop at the Barrymore Theater. Tennessee williams‘play the stars Jessica tandy, Marlon brando, Kim hunter, and Karl Malden in a race of 855 performances. He won the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize.

1953 Alfred drake, Richard kiley, and Doretta Morrow star in “a musical Arab night” called Kismet, starting a series of 583 performances at the Ziegfeld Theater. The score by Robert wright and George forrest, based on the music of Alexander Borodin, includes the songs “Stranger in Paradise” and “Baubles, Bangles and Beads”.

1960 Richard burtonreigns as King Arthur of Camelot begins at the Majestic Theater. The Alan jay lerner and Frédéric loewe the musical was adapted from TH White‘s The old and future king. Citizens of Enchanted Land understand Julie andrews, Robert Goulet, and Roddy McDowall. It lasts 873 performances.

1964 Arthur miller‘s Incident in Vichy opens at the Washington Square Theater. The story features a group of prisoners held by the Nazis in Vichy, awaiting deportation to concentration camps. The cast includes Hal holbrook, David Wayne, and Paul Mann.

1973 Bette Midler opens at the Palace Theater. Since the show was designed and reviewed as a concert rather than a Broadway show, it is classified as such by the Tony Awards committee. They bestow a special prize on Midler for “a concert of superior quality on the Broadway stage”.

1997 With the resumption of the performances of 1776 rebirth at the Gershwin Theater, Broadway sets a record for modernity by having 23 musicals performed simultaneously. So many musicals at one time hadn’t been happening since at least the 1960s and possibly as far back as the 1920s.

2001 New York’s iconic drama book store reopens in a new, more spacious location at 250 W. 40th Street, after a generation on Seventh Avenue and 48th Street.

2002 The sound of music the film leads Julie Andrews and Christophe plummer featured in a nationwide vacation-themed tour A royal Christmas. Andrews and Plummer serve as the mistress and master of ceremonies for the holiday extravagance, with a cast of 150 dancers, singers and musicians.

2003 Jefferson Mays plays around forty characters in Doug wrightthe solo drama of, I am my own woman, about a real German transvestite, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who survived both the Nazis and the Communists. The production was first seen Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons. He went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2004 and the Tony Award for Best Play.

2003 Mary tyler moore withdraws from the first Off-Broadway production of Daniel Simonthe last piece of, Rose’s dilemma, after Simon wrote a critical note of his performance. She leaves the theater a few moments before the performance in the morning.

2008 Liza Minnelli returns to Broadway for the first time in nearly a decade in his concert Liza is at the palace, paying homage to his godmother, vocal arranger and performer Kay thompson.

2017 The 1990 musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty Once on this island returns to Broadway in a new cover at Circle in the Square Theater. Michael Arden directs the immersive staging, which takes place in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane. Hailey Kilgore makes her Broadway debut as Ti Moune, starring Merle Dandrige, Quentin Earl Darrington, Alex Newell and Lea Salonga. The production won the Tony Award for Best Cover of a Musical.

2018 Stephanie J. Block, Teal Wicks and Micaela Diamond share the role of artist and pop culture icon Cher in The Cher show, opening on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theater. Written by Rick Elice, the musical uses 35 songs by Cher to retrace his journey from childhood on a trike to goddess of rock. Block’s performance earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
