1905 Theater producer Sam S. Shubert dies in train crash. His brothers Lee and JJ pay homage to him by giving his name to many theaters they will build, including their flagship on Shubert Alley in New York. He was 35 years old.
1906 Gerald Du Maurier starts a signature performance like Raffles, the amateur cracksman. The Tale of the Thief Gentleman Turned Into a Play by author EW Hornung and Eugene Presbrey features 351 performances at the Comedy Theater in London.
1925 A little love takes a little time. John galsworthyThe drama only lasts four performances at the 48th Street Theater on Broadway. OP Heggie plays a minister who remains married to his wife just to protect the identity of his true love.
1930 A rare cover by Henrik Ibsen The Vikings opens on West 54th Street in New York. This is the first play to be performed by producer Richard Herndon at his recently renamed New Yorker Theater, formerly known as Gallo Theater. Forty-three years later, the theater is transformed into the legendary Studio 54 nightclub.
nineteen eighty one Lena Horne sings many classic songs from her career and talks about her experiences at the Cotton Club, Hollywood and Broadway in Lena Horne: The Lady and her Music. Originally advertised as a limited four-week engagement, she continued her performances for over a year at the Nederlander Theater. Although the show debuted after the 1981 Tony Awards closed, the American Theater Wing honors Horne with a special award at the Ceremony of the Year, less than a month later.
1988 Stephen kingthe novel turns into a musical as Carrie opens on Broadway at the Virginia Theater. The Michel gore–Dean Pitchford show the stars Linzi Hateley like Carrie sprayed in blood, in the face Betty buckley like his mother. The cast also includes Charlotte d’Amboise, Darlene Love and Sally Ann Triplett. Despite five performances, the musical gained a cult following and was relaunched Off-Broadway in 2012.
1999 The married ones Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson, who has appeared in dozens of plays together, returns to Off-Broadway and stars in Tennessee Williams remembers, featuring their own reminiscences of the playwright and scenes from the late playwright’s works. Wallach, who won a Tony for his role in the original production of The rose tattoo, made his stage debut and met Jackson in an Off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams‘ This property is doomed.
2012 The world premiere of Hands on a hard body–Doug wright, Amanda Green, and Trey Anastasiomusical based on the feature-length documentary about an endurance competition in Texas – opens at La Jolla playhouse. Realized by Neil Pepe, the stars of the production Keith Carradine, Home hunter, and Kéala settle down. Hands on a hard body transfers to Broadway in 2013, but only lasted 28 performances.
