1927 The god of the fields works in mysterious ways. Paul GreenThe drama is about a hardworking farmer who denies the god of his neighbors and suffers misfortune until he complies. Fritz Leiber stars for the 45 performance race.

1941 Beautiful people move into the Lyceum Theater on Broadway. Guillaume SaroyanThe comedy’s about a woman who not only loves the packs of mice that live in her house, but thinks they spell her name with flowers. The part squeaks for 15 weeks.

1949 Broadway Diva Patti LuPone was born. She won Tony Awards for her performances in the original Broadway production of Evita and 2008 the relaunch of Gypsy. She also creates memorable roles in world premieres of musicals. Sunset Boulevard, Women on the verge of nervous breakdown, and War paint, and the covers of Olivier !, Everything is fine, and Sweeney todd.

1955 The evolution of the human race is only the point of the argument in Inherit the wind. Ed Begley and Paul Muni star in the Jerome Laurent and Robert E. Lee drama based on the trial of the “monkey” Scopes. There are 806 performances at the National Theater in New York City.

1977 Tomorrow is today, like Charles Strouse and Martin Charninis musical Annie opens on Broadway at the Alvin Theater. Andrea McArdle plays the role of the young orphan whose “hard life” turns from rags to riches when she meets magnate Oliver Warbucks, played by Reid shelton. The production wins Tony Awards for Best Musical as well as Best Actress for Dorothy Loudon who plays the role of babysitter Miss Hannigan.

2000 Four guys named José … and una Mujer named Maria!, a new Latin musical review by David Coffman and Dolores Prida, begins its Off-Broadway performances at the John Houseman Studio Theater. The show, which chronicles the Latin experience through multicultural musical favorites, travels to the Blue Angel Theater on Off-Broadway on September 18, where it runs until March 4, 2001.

2011 Jez butterworththe hit london drama Jerusalem, about the indelible inhabitants of a part of rural England, opens on Broadway at the Music Box Theater. Marc Rylance wins a Tony Award for his performance as Johnny “Rooster” Byron, a former daredevil motorcyclist and modern-day recorder player, whose supply of drugs, storytelling, alcohol and rock music attracts young people towards him.

2013 After acclaimed engagements in Scotland and at the Lincoln Center Festival, Alan cummingis a man Macbeth opens on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theater. Set in a psychiatric unit, Cumming plays a patient who relives Macbeth’s story, bringing more than 15 characters from Shakespeare’s bloody works to life.

2014 Eric coble‘s The velocity of autumn, featuring Estelle Parsons as an artist who barricades himself in his Brooklyn brownstone, opens on Broadway at the Booth Theater. Although Parsons and co-star Stephane Spinella receive positive reviews, reviews of the play are more mixed, and it only performs 16 performances.

2015 Lucy Simon, Michael Korie, Amy Powers and the musical by Michael Weller Doctor Zhivago opens on Broadway at the Broadway Theater. Tam Mutu plays Yurii Zhivago, opposite Kelli Barrett, Tom Hewitt and Paul Nolan. He only performs 23 performances.

2016 Duncan Sheik and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s musical American psychopath, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, opens at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater on Broadway. Benjamin Walker plays Wall Street banker Patrick Bateman. The production performs 54 performances.

2019 Nathan Lane, Kristine Nielsen and Julie White create comedic mayhem in Taylor Mac’s Gary: a sequel to Titus Andronicus when it opened at the Booth Theater. It won seven Tony Award nominations and has 65 performances.
