EAST GREENSBORO, NC (October 13, 2022) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s Theater Arts Program will present “Dearly Departed,” a comedy about death, written by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones and directed by Miller Lucky Jr.
In the Baptist backcountry of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South is rarely orderly and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpins’ other troubles continue to overshadow the solemn occasion.
Firstborn Ray-Bud drinks foolishly as funeral bills mount; Junior, the youngest son, juggles financial ruin, a pack of neckless monster children and a woman who suspects him of infidelity in the family car; their single sister, Delightful, faces death as well as life – by devouring junk food; and all the neighbors add more than two hundred. As the situation becomes fraught with difficulty, Ray-Bud tells his long-suffering wife, “When I die, don’t tell anyone. Just bury me in the garden and tell everyone I left you.
Amid the chaos, the Turpins turn to their friends and neighbors for comfort, an eccentric community of misfits who just manage to pull themselves together and help each other through their hours of need, and finally, funerals.
