Launch of the JGH Academy of Theater Arts in Canterbury

Theater producer, Joseph Hodges, and casting director, Jay Gardner, are launching an intensive full-time foundation program in Canterbury, Kent, in September, specializing in exceptional musical theater training.

Bringing together their many years of experience in the performing arts around the world and a unique set of contacts and relationships within the professional musical theater industry, they will deliver a course that will enable their students to acquire the knowledge, training and skills necessary to audition for other performing arts. train or prepare for an artistic career.

The one-year course will be geared towards performance and technical skills, as well as audition technique, with training in the following disciplines: singing, voice, acting, musicality, ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics, contemporary and commercial.

Their academic schedule, which runs from September to July, will include two performances at the nearby Malthouse Theatre:

  • A musical theater showcase in March, which will be presented to an invited audience of high profile agents, casting directors and representatives of professional theater schools.

  • A large-scale musical production in July, to give students the opportunity to understand a professional rehearsal process and how to fully develop a character from start to finish.

They are delighted to be joined by an exceptional faculty of incomparable teachers, who will ensure that a high standard of training is maintained across all disciplines, including: Head of Play, Katie Ray (Joseph, The Sound of Music , Million Dollar Quartet), vocal coach, Louise Young (Mamma Mia, The Marvelous Wonderettes, Friends) and ballet director, Anna Stevens (West Side Story, Miss Saigon, The Phantom of the Opera).

Applications are now open for September 2021 intake for anyone aged 16 and over seeking a career in the performing arts. First-round auditions will be by self-registration, but they hope to offer in-person auditions as soon as the current lockdown restrictions are eased.
